I miss Sid
Just discovered this page while looking for Les Barker. The Kippers – that takes me back a few years to when I were a lass! Loved them at Whitby folk festival.
Found an article about them in the Cambridge folk festival programme from 1985

I saw them a few times by mistake.
I think my first introduction to the world of The Kipper Family was listening to ‘Christmas with The Kippers’ on Radio 2 as a child. Had the good fortune of seeing the Kipper Family a few times and Sid as a solo act on many occasions. Most certainly Norfolk and good!
I first saw the Kipper Family at the 21st Towersey folk festival which must have been 87’or 88′ then saw them at Chippenham folk festival the next two years after that,Being a Norfolk man I couldn’t believe my luck to hear songs sung about my native county and what made me laugh even more than their songs was the excruciating looks on the faces of the serious folkies
Sid used to play Colchester Folk Club just after Christmas – many a good night was had by us who went!

The Kipper Family as a Folk Festival act was always my go to for a really good belly laugh! Their deadpan delivery added to the mirth, making grown men and women cry into their beer with laughter. I have many happy memories of laughing till it hurt at the exploits of Fatty Groves, The Village Pimp etc. But let’s not forget that these extremely clever parodies were only really funny if you knew the original, such clever writing producing songs which have now (almost) been accepted into the ‘Tradition’! Thanks for everything Sid and Henry, you haven’t been forgotten!
My favourite Kipper line is still: “No one lived to tell the tale!”
Sid was also very good when he teamed up with other singers. Once saw him with Dave Burland at Nottingham, in their Christmas Show. It was absolutely brilliant. I absolutely loved the Kippers! Sid was also very good on his own
I saw and met Sid at the Kirkgate Centre in Cockermouth where he educated me on the uses of a single sock as a walnut shell holder. This must have been 1995 or thereabouts
Put on Henry & Sid as one of a series of events I ran. From the moment they were in costume they were in character, including the c500m doddering walk to the venue. The landlord couldn't quite believe what we had dragged in off the street, let alone that these were the stars of the show - he was however still in the room by the time they did 'Norfolk & Good'.
Sid left the next morning carrying my old graduation suit - looks remarkably like the one in Photo 10 of the old photos listing.
